Eating out with Diabetess

Updated: Feb 9, 2022

Today is the 1st December and hopefully, you all have some lovely social events to attend leading up to #Christmas – and attend you will!

I know it can be difficult, worrying, stressful, complicated (plus more) to manage your diabetes when eating out so I created a few points which may help you along the way.

Plan ahead

Visit the restaurants' website and view their menu beforehand.

Make your menu choice before you go so you don't feel rushed and choose less healthy options.

If you are eating out later than your normal evening meal have a healthy snack to help curb your hunger and reduce the risk of overeating.

Start smart

Drink water and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Don't skip meals as this will leave you very hungry and can result in you overeating.

Be mindful of the bread basket and if you have a roll, be sparing with the spread or skip altogether.

Consider having two courses rather than three.

Share & Savour

Share your dessert with a friend, family member, or loved one.

How about limiting to two courses a main & dessert.

Try eating your dessert with a teaspoon to help savour the moment and last longer.

Enjoy the occasional dessert guilt-free.

Order Wisely

Choose baked, steamed, grilled, or boiled instead of fried, breaded, crispy, or creamy to reduce fat and calories.

Aim to have more vegetables than carbohydrates on your plate.

Use this opportunity to increase your oily fish intake, for those who don't normally meet the recommended one portion of oily fish per week.

Avoid added sugar found in BBQ, glazed, sticky, honey & drinks for example.

*I would say this post would be most helpful for those living with type 2 Diabetes and or wanting those wanting to lose weight
